Who We Are

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history, and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sand deposits. For nearly 30 years, our wholly-owned business arm has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs, and infrastructure.

Who You Are

We are looking for a front-line Prevention Worker based in Edmonton to work full-time Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. The successful candidate will work with the family support team to work directly with Indigenous families to promote wellness, prevent crises, and strengthen family bonds.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with community members and external partners.

Please note that this is a temporary position is based in Edmonton, AB.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Family Support: Provide direct support to Indigenous families, addressing their unique needs and challenges through culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approaches. Assist FSD in the development of funding proposals and grants and subsequent projects
  • Crisis Prevention: Develop and implement prevention strategies to mitigate potential crises within families, working proactively to address underlying issues.
  • Cultural Responsiveness: Infuse cultural practices and traditions into prevention programs, respecting and incorporating the diverse cultural backgrounds of the families served.
  • Community Collaboration: Work collaboratively with community leaders, elders, and other service providers to create a network of support for families.
  • Education and Awareness: Conduct workshops and educational sessions within the community to raise awareness about family wellness and prevention strategies and special events.
  • Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of Indigenous families within various systems, ensuring culturally appropriate services are accessible.
  • Case Management: Maintain accurate and confidential case records, documenting interventions and progress made with each family.
  • And other duties as required by FSD


  • Family support/youth work certificate/diploma/degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within an Indigenous community context.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community dynamics.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and prevention strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing and computer skills; excel, word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Suicide intervention training

 Other Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or access to a vehicle.
  • Clean Drivers abstract
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Fort Chipewyan as required.
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
  • On-call rotation availability when needed.
  • Willingness to submit to an oath of confidentiality.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule. Combination of in-office and at-community locations.
  • Must provide and possess a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be beneficial.

Job Type: Temporary

Salary: $27.00-$35.00 per hour
