Who We Are

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history, and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sand deposits. For nearly 30 years, our wholly-owned business arm has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs, and infrastructure.

Who You Are

We are looking for an Executive Director to work full-time Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 430pm as well as on-call. The successful candidate will work with closely with the board of Directors and be responsible for the overall management of Child & Family Services which will provide Prevention, Intervention, Family Enhancement, Kinship and Foster Care.

The Director is also responsible for the overall financial management of the program and will work closely with Mikisew Chief and Council, Board of Directors, Elders and Alberta Government Liaison’s as well as Indigenous Services Canada.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with community members and external partners.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Excellent communication skills with management team, staff, Board of Directors, Administrator, Chief and Council, Federal/Provincial government representatives, staff and various programs/vendors in order to provide quality service delivery
  • Knowledgeable and a working understanding of the Child Youth Family Enhancement Act and Manual as well as other legislation within the scope of Children Services,
  • Review, revise, implement and monitor business/strategic planning/work plan and operational plan
  • Submit all required annual reports for AGM/monthly board reports
  • Work with Finance to ensure budget meets program needs, complete ongoing reviews and monitoring of expenditures in accordance with the approved budget and/or contracts
  • Policy review, development and implementation
  • Perform all duties in a manner consistent with Mikisew Cree First Nation Mission/Vision  Statement


  • Master of Social Work or Bachelors with minimum 10 years experience working in Children Services
  • Current Children Services Delegation or ability to attain training
  • Current Alberta College of Social Work Registration (ACSW)
  • Minimum of five (5) years Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA) Services experience
  • Must respect Mikisew Cree Traditional Language and Culture
  • Must have knowledge of community resources and ability to work with community partners at all levels
  • Must maintain professional ethical conduct at all times
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Other Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or access to a vehicle.
  • Clean Drivers abstract
  • Extensive travel to Fort Chipewyan, Fort McMurray as required.
  • Ability to work on-call.
  • Submit to an oath of confidentiality.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule. Combination of in-office and at-community locations.
  • Please note this position will be based out of Edmonton temporarily and then will be located in Fort Chipewyan
  • Must provide and possess a clear and current criminal record and vulnerable sector check and child Intervention check
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be beneficial.
