Who We Are

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. Who You Are

As an HR Business Partner, you play a pivotal role in the collaborative efforts of the HR team at Mikisew Cree First Nation. In this position, you will report directly to the Director, HR. You will actively contribute to the implementation of the HR strategy and deliver diverse human resources solutions. Your responsibilities will span strategic HR management, change management, organizational effectiveness, recruitment, employee engagement, compensation & benefits, talent management, training & development, and health & safety.

Please note that this position is based in Edmonton, AB.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Collaborate with the HR team to implement and support the HR strategy.
  • Provide comprehensive human resources solutions across various areas, including strategic HR management, change management, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Support full-cycle recruitment and contribute to talent planning.
  • Conduct engagement surveys, focus groups, and exit interviews, providing insightful analysis and recommendations.
  • Offer coaching to supervisors/management, oversee workplace investigations, and manage separations.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, human rights, and occupational health & safety legislation.
  • Oversee performance management processes and contribute to the development of pay structures, benefits plans, and wellness initiatives.
  • Manage and support the benefits program, including communication, education, and enrollment.
  • Work with leaders to identify key talent and support talent development initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training programs.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the HR department.
  • Offer guidance on legislative requirements for occupational health & safety (OH&S) and oversee the development and implementation of OH&S initiatives.
  • Manage HRIS and prepare required metric and data reporting.

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in human resources.
  • Post-secondary education specializing in business, human resources, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of HRIS (BambooHR, Taleo, Oracle HCM, Peoplesoft, SAP, etc.).
  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation preferred.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Canada Labour Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office products.

Other Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or have access to a vehicle.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Fort Chipewyan as required.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
  • Willingness to submit to an oath of confidentiality.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be beneficial.

Benefits and Compensation Highlights

  • The salary range for this role is $75,000 – $95,000 yearly, dependent on education and experience.
  • Full-time position with typical office hours consisting of 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday however flexibility will be required for occasional work on evenings and weekends (with encouragement and support for a work-life balance)
